Six Recommendations for a Basic Income Guarantee in the NWT

The Foundations for Action report explores the needs of the diverse communities across the NWT with particular attention to Indigenous values, varying costs of living in different places, and the streamlining of government administration. The six recommendations of the report can be read in the attached infographic and focus on:

  • Awareness, Education and Dialogue
  • Modelling and Impacts
  • GNWT Pilot or Program Development
  • Federal Government Investment
  • GNWT Program Consistency
  • Indigenous Self-Determination

“This report is an important step towards designing and delivering a basic income guarantee for everyone in the territory who needs it,” said Suzette Montreuil, project leader for Alternatives North. “This isn’t just happening here – people across Canada and around the world are working towards a basic income, and we need to make sure that whatever form it takes in the NWT makes sense for all of us here.”
