Alternatives North Asks: Who’s Watching the Mines Now

Alternatives North is calling our GNWT for dismantling independent oversight on diamond mining in the NWT. GNWT did not allow for any public engagement in the decisions to shut down independent oversight at the Diavik and Snap Lake diamond mines. Following devolution, GNWT has not proven itself as a responsible resource manager with repeated receiverships, public liabilities and contaminated sites. It’s time for the Auditor General of Canada to be called in to do a performance audit.
