Office of Canadian Prime Minister Reply to Alternatives North letter on Taltson Hydro July 17 2025

AN Urges Ottawa to replace $2–3B Taltson Hydro Expansion with sustainable community projects

Alternatives North is calling on the federal government to reject the GNWT’s proposed $2–3 billion Taltson River Hydro Expansion, warning it is a costly, high-risk mega-project that will fail to deliver for people or the environment. The plan prioritizes industry over communities, has no committed customers, and will not achieve urgently needed greenhouse gas reductions. In a letter to Prime Minister Mark Carney—acknowledged by his office—Alternatives North urges Ottawa to redirect funding toward proven, community-driven renewable energy projects that deliver real, lasting benefits. In Touch With The Land

In Touch With the Land: Exploring Opportunities for Landscape Design at the Post-Remediation Giant Mine Site is a landscape design study conducted by Timothy Bailey Edwards, a homegrown Yellowknifer. Supported by Alternatives North and the Landscape Architecture Canada Foundation, the study is grounded in conversations with local Indigenous organizations and community members. It responds to the deep historical, cultural, and environmental significance of the Giant Mine site—acknowledging its legacy of contamination, human tragedy, and loss of traditional land use—while proposing design interventions that invite public reflection, engagement, and long-term stewardship. Mining Subsidies Without Debate: Alternatives North Urges MLAs to Act

Alternatives North urges Yellowknife MLAs to question Cabinet’s recent approval of public subsidies for diamond mines, made without public debate or transparency. Our concern is the lack of clear terms, accountability, and the decision to subsidize wealthy corporations amid GNWT’s fiscal challenges. We call for disclosure of any agreements, flag regulatory capture risks, and question whether funds would be better spent on workforce development. We encourage MLAs to raise these issues during the upcoming May-June sitting. READ MORE

Basic Income Guarantee for the Northwest Territories by Alternatives January 2025

A Way to Eliminate Poverty in the NWT

“Alternatives North has advocated for a real anti-poverty plan for 30 years. This report shows the way to eliminate poverty in the NWT. We need an up-front investment that provides a truly stable foundation for everyone, rather than relying on a safety net approach,” said Suzette Montreuil, Alternatives North. Read More…
